Baby Sleep Apnea and SPD
Lulu had surgery yesterday to help her sleep at night. I’ll get into it more but Lulu has had ear infections non stop since she was three months old until she got ear tubes put in when she was three. The constant ear infections led to vestibular dysfunction. It led to a delay in her self-soothing abilities. What does that mean? My baby girl could not just chill. Ever. The fancy category is sensory processing disorder (SPD). Once she got upset, she would stay that way. As a baby, she couldn’t be in a car, stroller, or mode of transportation without screaming til she puked. Like Stan on South Park. Tantrums and puking. I believe that since she couldn’t develop her self-soothing, her brain and body went into overdrive with her verbal skills. Lulu started talking at six months. Full sentences at 12 months.
At Lulu’s last check-up, our new doctor asked me how she sleeps at night. Ha! She’s never slept through the night. She used to have night terrors. She snores like a lumberjack.(Sorry, lumberjacks.) Steve has to wear earplugs to block her snores. She has snorting fits. Apparently this is not normal. Our son, Axel, sleeps 10 to 12 hours straight without moving. Axel falls asleep easily on his own. Pretty, new doctor tells me that Lulu has something like sleep apnea. Lack of quality sleep is contributing to her difficulties. 4 and a half years later and nobody bothered to ask how she sleeps. I never questioned it. I thought both of my kids were sleep freaks. Bad mommy.
